Step - 12-month paid traineeships for young East Londoners to step into careers in the creative & cultural sectors
Our STEP programme returns for its 10th iteration with 10 new junior or entry-level roles in the creative and cultural industries, designed for young East Londoners aged 18-30 to land their first role in the industry.
You will be matched with one of our committed local employers to experience a junior role and get paid a London Living Wage (£13.15/ph) or above salary over a 12-month training programme. Unlike a regular entry-level role, through this popular programme, you'll be supported in your development as you get your foot in the door, develop a range of skills and creative approaches, grow as part of a cohort of people with similar passions, and take part in our monthly professional development workshops.
‘The Ethics of Intimacy Coordination’
Heath Pennington, intimacy coordinator and Visiting Postgraduate Research Associate at QMUL, to speak about their research at a Centre for Film and Ethics seminar on Thursday 29 February at 5pm in Arts One G.19. All colleagues, students and invited guests interested in the ethics of film or theatre, depictions of intimacy or the issue of consent are welcome to join us.
What are the ethical considerations of choreographing and supporting portrayals of intimacy in film, television and theatre? Intimacy Coordinator Heath Pennington discusses bodily autonomy, diversity, and empowerment as they relate to consent-based performance practices.
Heath Pennington (they/them) is a certified intimacy coordinator drawing on over 10 years of theatre, film, and television cast and crew experience to enable safe and consensual performances of nudity and simulated sex. Heath is also an educator, creator, doctoral candidate at the University of California Santa Barbara, Visiting Postgraduate Research Associate at Queen Mary, and Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths. They hold an MA in Gender Studies from Central European University and an MA in Performance and Culture from Goldsmiths. Their interdisciplinary research investigates consent, intersectional oppressions, kink and BDSM. Add Heath on Twitter/X @_H_Penn, check out their website penningtonintimacy.weebly.com and find them on IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3227035/
SEEKING - Exhibition
22 - 28 February 2024
“Islam began as a stranger and will return as it began, a stranger; and blessed are the strangers.” (Sahih Muslim 145)
A collaboration between researcher and artist, this exhibition provides notes on the path towards the self, illuminating the cyclical and communal nature of the spiritual, philosophical, emotional and embodied journey of becoming. Oral history interviews conducted by Rumi invited Muslims of marginalised genders and sexualities to reflect upon their relationships with Islam, Islamic feminism, and inclusive Muslim spaces. The clips presented here are neither all-encompassing nor entirely representative of LGBTQIA+ and feminist Muslims and our spaces. Rather, they are intended to act as a mirror to you, the visitor. We hope that by meditating on A’s pieces, you will leave with (re-)awakened curiosity and a desire to seek, to know, and to love and liberate.
